Why architectural shingles

Dimensional Shingles, Not 3-Tab

A richer look

Architectural shingles are thicker and dimensional, so a roof has depth and shadow lines instead of the flat, repetitive look of old 3-tab. It reads as a premium roof from the street.

Better wind resistance

D.C. sees real wind — summer thunderstorms and tropical storm remnants roll through every year. Architectural shingles are heavier and bond in multiple layers, so they hold on better when it blows.

Longer service life

More asphalt, more fiberglass, more protection. Manufacturers typically rate architectural shingles at 25–30 years — a meaningful step up from basic 3-tab.

Algae resistance for D.C. humidity

Humid District summers streak a lot of roofs black with algae. We install algae-resistant architectural shingles that keep your roof looking clean years longer.

Styles & colors

Pick a Look That Fits Your Home

Architectural shingles come in a wide range of colors and blends. During your free inspection we'll bring samples and help you choose — here are the directions most D.C. homeowners go:

Charcoal & slate grays

The modern classic. Dark grays flatter brick colonials and pair well with white trim — a very common combination in Northwest D.C.

Weathered wood blends

Warm browns and tans with natural variation. A great fit for ranch homes and split-levels across the District's residential neighborhoods.

Earth tones & reds

Richer reds and browns that complement older brick homes. If your home sits in a historic district, material choices may be reviewed — we know the ropes and can guide you; see our historic district roofing guide.

How it works

What a Shingle Roof From Us Includes

  1. Free inspection & honest assessment. We look at the whole roof — shingles, flashing, valleys, ventilation — and tell you straight whether repair or replacement makes sense.
  2. Written estimate, no pressure. Line items you can read and understand. You decide on your schedule.
  3. Tear-off & deck check. We remove the old roof down to the decking and inspect every board. Soft or rotted decking gets replaced before anything new goes on.
  4. Full system install. Ice-and-water shield where it belongs, quality underlayment, starter shingles, architectural shingles, and new flashing at every penetration.
  5. Ridge vent & flashing done right. Proper ventilation and correctly detailed flashing are what make a roof last — we don't skip them.
  6. Thorough cleanup. Magnet sweeps for nails, gutters cleared of debris, and your yard left the way we found it.

Estimates, not quotes

What Does Shingle Roofing Cost in D.C.?

Planning estimates for the Washington, D.C. market — not quotes. Every project gets a free inspection and a written estimate.

Typical D.C. home

$7,000–$16,000 for a full architectural shingle replacement on a typical detached or semi-detached District home.

Per square foot

$4.50–$8.50 per sq ft installed, depending on roof size, pitch, decking condition, and access.

Steep pitches, multiple stories, and rotted decking move a project toward the higher end; simple, accessible roofs land lower. Small repairs are a different story — see our roof repair page for typical repair ranges.

Common questions

Shingle Roofing FAQs

How long do architectural shingles last?

Manufacturers typically rate architectural shingles at 25–30 years. Real-world life depends on installation quality, attic ventilation, and maintenance — which is exactly why we do full tear-offs, check the decking, and detail the flashing. A well-installed roof with good ventilation gives you the best shot at the long end of that range.

Will my shingles get those black algae streaks I see around D.C.?

Algae streaking is very common in the District's humid summers — those black streaks on north-facing slopes are living algae, not dirt. We install algae-resistant architectural shingles with copper-containing granules that discourage growth, so your roof stays cleaner-looking for years longer than a basic shingle would.

Can you match my existing shingles for a repair?

Often we can get close. Shingle manufacturers update their color lines regularly, so discontinued colors can't be matched exactly — but for a localized repair we can usually find a near match that blends well. At your free inspection we'll show you samples against your current roof so you can see for yourself.

Should I repair my shingle roof or replace it?

If the damage is localized and the roof still has years of life left, a targeted repair is usually the smart money. If you're seeing widespread granule loss, curling, or repeated leaks, replacement starts making more sense. Not sure? Take our repair-vs-replace quiz — it takes two minutes and points you in the right direction.
