Know your enemy

D.C. Weather vs. Your Roof

The District's weather is rough on roofs in several different ways. Here's what each threat does:

Wind

Summer thunderstorms and tropical storm remnants rip shingles loose, lift flashing, and tear at ridge caps. Missing shingles after a windy night are the most common storm call we get.

Heavy rain

Cloudbursts overwhelm clogged gutters and scuppers, forcing water under shingles and into flat-roof seams. Ponding water on rowhouse flat roofs is a top cause of leaks.

Hail

Hail bruises shingles — knocking off granules and cracking the mat underneath. The damage is often invisible from the ground, which is why a post-hail inspection matters.

Tropical storm remnants

The combination punch: wind plus sustained heavy rain. Remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms regularly reach D.C. and exploit every weak flashing detail.

Snow & ice

Freeze-thaw cycles open up small cracks, ice dams back water up under shingles, and heavy snow loads stress older structures. Spring often reveals what winter did.

Summer heat & UV

Relentless D.C. heat ages shingles and membranes, dries out sealants, and makes every small weakness worse. Heat is the slow storm.

Water Coming In? Call Now.

Active leaks get priority. We offer emergency tarping to stop the water, then a free inspection and a real repair plan.

Storm Damage Self-Check

After a storm, walk through these 8 warning signs — from the ground and inside your home. Check everything you see, then tap "Check my roof."

What do you see on your roof or in your home?

This self-check doesn't replace a professional inspection.

After the storm

What to Do After a Storm

  1. Stay safe — don't climb up. Storm-damaged roofs are slippery and unstable. Check what you can from the ground and inside the house.
  2. Call us — emergency tarping. If water is coming in, we tarp the damaged area to stop it fast: (571) 241-5535.
  3. Free inspection & documentation. We walk the whole roof, photograph every bit of damage, and give you a clear written assessment.
  4. Repair or replacement plan. A written scope and price for putting it right — whether that's targeted repairs or a full replacement.

Insurance, honestly

Storm Damage & Insurance

We keep this simple and honest: document damage with photos as soon as it's safe, and keep any receipts for emergency work. We provide inspection notes and photos you can share with your insurer. What we don't do is handle claims for you — we're roofers, not public adjusters, and your coverage depends on your policy. Talk to your insurer about what's covered; we'll take care of the roof.

For repairs, see our roof repair and flat roof repair pages. If the damage is extensive, our roof replacement overview explains the process.

Common questions

Storm Damage FAQs

Do you offer emergency tarping?

Yes. If water is coming into your home after a storm, call us at (571) 241-5535 and we'll get a tarp over the damaged area to stop the water. Storm calls get priority — then we schedule a full free inspection and a proper repair plan.

What are the signs of hail damage?

Bruised or cracked shingles, granule loss (look for piles of granules at downspouts), dents on vents, flashing, and gutters, and soft spots you can feel on the shingle surface. Hail damage is often invisible from the ground — a close-up roof inspection is the way to know for sure.

Will my insurance cover storm damage?

It depends on your policy — sudden storm damage is often covered, while wear and tear generally isn't. We can't speak for your insurer, so talk to them directly. We provide inspection notes and photos you can share with your insurer, but we don't handle claims for you.

How fast can you get here after a storm?

Storm calls are prioritized — active leaks go to the front of the line. We won't promise a specific response time because it depends on how widespread the storm was, but call us and we'll tell you straight where you stand and get you scheduled.
