What we do

Slate Repair & Restoration

Most slate roofs we see don't need to be replaced — they need a specialist. Slate is among the longest-lived roofing materials ever made; what fails is usually the flashing, the fasteners, or a few dozen slates, not the whole roof.

Broken & slipped slate replacement

We replace cracked, missing, and slipped slates with matching pieces, properly hooked and head-lapped — never face-nailed caulk jobs.

Valley, hip & ridge work

Open valleys, hips, and ridges take the most weather. We rebuild them with proper metalwork so water runs where it should.

Flashing & fastener renewal

On older slate roofs the original nails and flashings often give out long before the slate does. Renewing them can add decades of service.

Tile roofs

Clay & Concrete Tile Repair

Tile roofs show up across the District on Spanish-revival and Mediterranean-style homes. Tile itself is tough — the weak points are cracked tiles from foot traffic or impacts, slipped tiles, and aging underlayment and flashing beneath them. We replace damaged tiles with matched pieces, correct slipped courses, and renew the flashing details that actually keep water out.

If your tile roof is leaking, the tile is rarely the whole story — call us and we'll inspect the full system, not just the surface.

Own a Home in a Historic District?

Much of the District — Georgetown, Capitol Hill, and many other neighborhoods — sits in historic districts where roofing work may need review by the D.C. Historic Preservation Office. We work with these rules every day: appropriate materials, matching profiles, and documentation that keeps your project moving.

General guidance only — rules vary by district, so always confirm requirements with the D.C. Historic Preservation Office.

How we price it

Every Slate Project Is Custom

No two slate roofs are alike — different stone, different age, different flashing, different access. That's why we don't publish slate pricing: a real number requires a real inspection. Call us and we'll come out, look at your roof, and give you a written proposal scoped to exactly what your roof needs. Free inspection, no pressure, no guesswork.

How it works

Our Slate & Tile Process

  1. Free inspection, roof-walk included. We get on the roof and document every slate, tile, valley, and flashing detail with photos you can keep.
  2. Written proposal. A clear scope: what's being repaired, what materials we're using, and what it costs. Nothing vague.
  3. Careful, old-school workmanship. Slate work is hand work. We protect the landscaping, stage materials safely, and treat your roof like the historic fabric it is.
  4. Walkthrough & documentation. We walk you through the finished work and leave you with photos and notes — useful if your district ever asks what was done.

Common questions

Slate & Tile FAQs

Can my slate roof be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?

In our experience, repair is the answer far more often than homeowners expect. Slate outlasts its flashings and fasteners by generations — if the stone is sound, replacing broken slates and renewing the metalwork restores the roof. We only recommend replacement when the slate itself is widely failing. Our free inspection gives you an honest read.

Can you match my existing slate?

Usually, yes. We source both new quarried slate and reclaimed slate, and we match for color, texture, thickness, and size. Older roofs sometimes used stone from quarries that no longer operate — in those cases we find the closest visual match from reclaimed stock. We'll show you the match before we install it.

How long does a slate roof last?

Slate is among the longest-lived roofing materials in existence — many slate roofs serve for generations with periodic repair of flashings and fasteners. We won't put a number on your roof without seeing it, because condition, stone quality, and past work all matter. That's what the free inspection is for.

What are the rules for roofing in a historic district?

In D.C.'s historic districts, roofing work may require review by the Historic Preservation Office — generally, replacing slate with asphalt shingles is discouraged and may not be approved, while in-kind slate repairs are simpler. Rules vary by district, so confirm with HPO. We've written a full historic district roofing guide that walks you through it, and we document our work to support your approvals.
